Lesson Guide
Explanation
In the last lesson you built equivalent ratios by multiplying both parts. Simplifying is the same idea running backwards: you divide both parts by the same number. Take twelve to eighteen. Divide both by two and you get six to nine. Divide both of those by three and you get two to three. Look down the four bars. Every single one changes colour in exactly the same place, so all four describe the identical mixture — the only thing that changed is how many pieces you chopped it into. That is why simplifying is safe. You have not altered the comparison at all, you have just found the tidiest pair of numbers that says the same thing.
Your Turn
Simplify 10 : 15 by dividing both parts. Check: both divide by 5, giving 2 : 3.
Watch Out
Whatever you divide one part by, you must divide the other by too. Halving only the first part changes the ratio.
Explanation
You can simplify in little steps, but there is a faster way. Find the highest common factor of the two numbers and divide by that once. For twenty four to thirty six, the factors of twenty four are one, two, three, four, six, eight, twelve and twenty four, and the factors of thirty six are one, two, three, four, six, nine, twelve, eighteen and thirty six. The highest they share is twelve. Twenty four divided by twelve is two, thirty six divided by twelve is three, so the answer is two to three. Notice the order never changes: forty five to twenty seven simplifies to five to three, not three to five.
Your Turn
Simplify 18 : 24 in one move. Check: the HCF is 6, so 18 divided by 6 is 3 and 24 divided by 6 is 4, giving 3 : 4.
Watch Out
Simplifying never reorders the parts. 45 : 27 becomes 5 : 3, with the bigger number still on the left.
Explanation
How do you know when to stop? A ratio is in simplest form when the only number that divides into both parts is one. Four to nine is finished, because nothing except one goes into both. So are five to seven, three to eight and seven to ten. But six to nine is not finished, because three divides both, giving two to three. Eight to twelve is not finished either — halve it to four to six, and if both numbers are still even you halve again to get two to three. That near miss catches people out constantly. Work through two, then three, then five, then seven, and stop only when nothing divides both parts.
Your Turn
Is 9 : 15 in simplest form? Check: no, both divide by 3, giving 3 : 5.
Watch Out
Stopping one step early. 4 : 6 looks neat, but both parts are even, so it halves again to 2 : 3.
Explanation
Many ratio questions arrive with units attached, and they need two steps in a fixed order. First convert both amounts to the same unit, then simplify. Simplify five hundred grams to two kilograms like this. Two kilograms is two thousand grams, so you have five hundred to two thousand, and the highest common factor is five hundred, giving one to four. Try forty centimetres to one metre: that becomes forty to one hundred, divide both by twenty, and you get two to five. Twenty minutes to one hour becomes twenty to sixty, which is one to three. If you simplify before converting you get garbage, because the two numbers were never measuring the same thing.
Your Turn
Simplify 600 m : 3 km. Check: 3 km = 3000 m, so 600 : 3000, and dividing both by 600 gives 1 : 5.
Watch Out
Never simplify while the units still differ. Convert to the smaller unit first, then look for the common factor.
Explanation
Two things to finish with. First, checking. If you divided twelve to eighteen by six to get two to three, then multiplying two to three back by six should rebuild the original, and it does: two sixes are twelve, three sixes are eighteen. That takes five seconds and catches almost every slip. Second, ratios can compare three quantities, and they simplify in exactly the same way. Six to nine to twelve all divide by three, giving two to three to four. Ten to twenty to thirty all divide by ten, giving one to two to three. The only extra care needed is that your dividing number must go into every part — two is useless on six to nine to twelve, because two does not divide nine.
Your Turn
Simplify 8 : 12 : 20. Check: all three divide by 4, giving 2 : 3 : 5. Multiply back by 4 to confirm.
Watch Out
With three parts, a factor that works on two of them is not enough. It has to divide every part.
📌 Key Points — this lesson in a nutshell
  • Simplify a ratio by dividing every part by the same number.
  • Dividing both parts does not change the comparison — only the size of the parts.
  • Dividing by the highest common factor reaches simplest form in one move.
  • A ratio is in simplest form when the only number dividing all parts is 1.
  • Simplifying never changes the order: 45 : 27 becomes 5 : 3, not 3 : 5.
  • If both parts are still even, you have not finished — keep halving.
  • With units, convert to the same unit FIRST, then simplify: 500 g : 2 kg is 500 : 2000 = 1 : 4.
  • Convert to the smaller unit so you avoid decimals.
  • Check by multiplying your simplified ratio back up — it should rebuild the original.
  • Three-part ratios simplify the same way, but the factor must divide every part.
Step 1: Introduction
Step 1 of 5
12 : 18 and 2 : 3 are the same mixture 12 : 18 30 parts 6 : 9 15 parts 4 : 6 10 parts 2 : 3 5 parts every bar changes colour at exactly the same place SIMPLIFYING means dividing both parts by the same number. 12 : 18, divide both by 2, gives 6 : 9. Divide both by 3, gives 2 : 3. The bars prove nothing changed — only the size of the parts did.
Simplify 24 : 36 in a single move Slowly, in small steps 24 : 36 divide both by 2 12 : 18 divide both by 6 2 : 3 Fast, using the HCF factors of 24: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24 factors of 36: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 36 highest common factor = 12 24 divided by 12 = 2 36 divided by 12 = 3 Both routes land on 2 : 3. The HCF just gets there in one move. 18 : 24 divide both parts by the HCF 6 3 : 4 20 : 50 divide both parts by the HCF 10 2 : 5 45 : 27 divide both parts by the HCF 9 5 : 3 21 : 35 divide both parts by the HCF 7 3 : 5
Simplest form: the only common factor left is 1 ALREADY FINISHED 4 : 9 nothing divides both 5 : 7 nothing divides both 3 : 8 nothing divides both 7 : 10 nothing divides both NOT FINISHED YET 6 : 9 both divide by 3 2 : 3 8 : 12 both divide by 4 2 : 3 10 : 25 both divide by 5 2 : 5 14 : 21 both divide by 7 2 : 3 The test: is there ANY number bigger than 1 that divides into both? If yes, keep going. If no, you are done. Try 2, then 3, then 5, then 7. Watch for the near miss: both numbers even means keep halving. 8 : 12 halves to 4 : 6, which is still even, so halve again to 2 : 3.
Convert the units, THEN simplify Simplify 500 g : 2 kg 500 g : 2 kg to grams 500 : 2000 HCF 500 1 : 4 Two steps, always in that order: units first, common factor second. 40 cm : 1 m 40 : 100 HCF 20 2 : 5 20 min : 1 hour 20 : 60 HCF 20 1 : 3 600 m : 3 km 600 : 3000 HCF 600 1 : 5 750 mL : 3 L 750 : 3000 HCF 750 1 : 4 Simplifying before converting gives nonsense. 500 : 2 is not 250 : 1 of anything — the units were never made to match.
Multiply back up to check your answer You simplified 12 : 18 to 2 : 3. Is that right? You divided by 6, so multiply your answer by 6 to get back. 2 x 6 = 12 and 3 x 6 = 18 — it rebuilds the original, so it is correct. Three-part ratios simplify exactly the same way 6 : 9 : 12 divide all three by 3 2 : 3 : 4 10 : 20 : 30 divide all three by 10 1 : 2 : 3 8 : 12 : 20 divide all three by 4 2 : 3 : 5 The number you divide by must go into ALL of the parts. For 6 : 9 : 12 you cannot use 2, because 2 does not divide 9.
