Lesson Guide
Explanation
To turn twenty-four-hour time into twelve-hour, take twelve off any hour of thirteen or more — eighteen fifty is ten to seven in the evening. Minutes roll at sixty, so eighteen fifty plus a quarter of an hour is nineteen oh five, never eighteen sixty-five. Do the arithmetic in twenty-four-hour time and convert at the very end, because there is no am or pm to keep track of while you work.
Your Turn
What is 2105 in 12-hour time? Check: 9:05 pm.
Watch Out
A quarter of an hour is 15 minutes, not 25. And 50 + 15 rolls the hour over.
Explanation
Crossing midnight, treat it as a landmark: hop to it, note what is left of the duration, then carry on from zero. From twenty-two twenty-five, thirty-five minutes reach twenty-three hundred, an hour more reaches midnight, and fifteen minutes past that give twelve fifteen. The thing people forget is that the date has changed too, so write the day beside the time whenever you cross midnight.
Your Turn
A film starts at 10:25 pm and runs 1 h 50 min. When does it end? Check: 12:15 am, the next day.
Watch Out
Crossing midnight changes the DAY as well as the time. "0015" without a day is half an answer.
Explanation
For a journey of more than a few hours, count to midnight first. Leaving Friday at thirteen hundred, eleven hours reach Saturday midnight and the remaining nine give Saturday oh nine hundred. For longer trips, take off twenty-four hours per whole day before anything else — fifty hours is two days and two hours — because whole days move the day name and leave the clock alone. Say the day out loud at each step; that habit alone fixes most of these.
Your Turn
Leave Saturday 2200 and travel 30 hours. When do you arrive? Check: Monday 0400.
Watch Out
A journey under 24 hours can still land on the next day. Check against midnight, not against 24.
Explanation
A flight across time zones is two steps in a fixed order: add the flight time on the departure city's clock, then convert once at the end. Leaving Los Angeles at twenty-three hundred on Saturday and flying twenty hours lands at nineteen hundred on Sunday, LA time; Sydney is seventeen hours ahead, which is Monday midday. You left on Saturday night and arrived on Monday, because the clocks jumped seventeen hours on top of the twenty you spent flying. Going the other way the clock can seem to run backwards, and that is real — check the two steps and trust them.
Your Turn
Leave Sydney Monday 1000 and fly 14 hours to LA, which is 17 h behind. When do you land? Check: Monday 0700.
Watch Out
Convert once, at the end. Converting in the middle of the flight calculation mixes two clocks in one sum.
Explanation
Four jobs, and a question usually wants two or three of them in order: convert the format, bridge midnight, take off whole days, and apply the time zone once at the end. Saturday oh nine hundred plus seventeen hours is fifteen hours to Sunday midnight and two more, Sunday oh two hundred. Name the day at every step and the hardest item on the paper becomes bookkeeping. Quiz and exercises now.
Your Turn
Saturday 0900 plus 17 hours is what day and time? Check: Sunday 0200.
Watch Out
Read whether the answer is wanted in the departure city's time or the arrival city's. They differ by the whole offset.
📌 Key Points — this lesson in a nutshell
  • 24-hour to 12-hour: take 12 off any hour of 13 or more. 1850 is 6:50 pm.
  • Minutes roll over at 60, not 100. 1850 plus a quarter of an hour is 1905, never 1865.
  • Across midnight, stop at 12:00 and start again. Across days, take off 24 hours per whole day.
  • A flight: add the flight time on the departure city's clock, then convert to the arrival city once, and name the day at every step.
Step 1: Introduction
Step 1 of 5
1850 plus a quarter of an hour 1212345678910111850 = 6:50 pm→1212345678910111905 = 7:05 pm 1850+ 10 min1900+ 5 min1905 Take 12 off any 24-hour hour of 13 or more: 1850 is 6:50 pm, 2105 is 9:05 pm. A quarter of an hour is 15 minutes. 50 + 15 = 65, which rolls over: 1905. Do the addition in 24-hour time and convert at the end — there is no am/pm to lose track of. Before 1300 the two clocks agree: 0915 is 9:15 am.
From 10:25 pm, 1 hour 50 minutes later 12123456789101110:25 pm→12123456789101112:15 am 2225+ 35 min2300+ 1 h 150015 Midnight is just a landmark. Hop to it, note what is left, then carry on from 0000. From 2225: 35 minutes reach 2300, then 1 hour reaches 0000, and 15 minutes more give 0015. And the DATE has changed — 0015 is the next day. Write the day beside the time whenever you cross midnight.
A 20-hour journey leaving Friday 1300 Fri 1300+ 11 hSat 0000+ 9 hSat 0900 Eleven hours reach Saturday midnight; the other nine give Saturday 0900. For longer trips, take off 24 hours for each whole day first: 50 hours is 2 days and 2 hours. Whole days move the day name and leave the clock alone; the extra hours then move the clock. Leave Saturday 2200, travel 30 hours: 1 day to Sunday 2200, then 6 hours to Monday 0400. Say the day out loud at each step. That habit alone fixes most of these. A journey of less than 24 hours can still cross a day, as this one does.
Sydney is 17 hours ahead of Los Angeles leave LA Sat 2300+ 20 h flightSun 1900 LA time+ 17 hMon 1200 Sydney Two steps, in this order: add the flight time on the departure clock, THEN convert once. Saturday 2300 plus 20 hours is Sunday 1900, still in LA time. Sydney is 17 hours ahead: 5 hours reach Monday 0000, and 12 more give Monday 1200. Left Saturday night, landed Monday midday — because the clocks jumped 17 hours as well as the 20 spent flying. Ahead means ADD; behind means SUBTRACT. Converting first works too and must give the same answer. Flying the other way the clock can seem to go backwards: leave Sydney Monday 1000, fly 14 hours, land LA Monday 0700. That is real. Do not "fix" it — check the two steps and trust them.
