Lesson Guide
Explanation
A timetable is a grid, and the first skill is staying on one line of it. A row is one film: its name, its start, its end. Lost Map runs from twelve twenty to two ten, and that duration is the usual hop through landmarks, forty minutes to one, an hour to two, ten more, one hour fifty. Keep a finger on the row, because the classic slip is reading the start of one film with the end of the film below it.
Your Turn
How long is Sky Racers, 10:15 to 11:50? Check: 45 min + 50 min = 1 h 35 min.
Watch Out
Stay on the row. Sky Racers ends at 11:50, not at 1:05 — that is the next film.
Explanation
How long to wait means finding the first departure after the time you arrive, and subtracting. Reach the stop at seven thirty and the seven twenty-five has gone; the next is seven forty-five, a fifteen-minute wait. Arrive one minute after a bus and you wait almost the whole gap. If the buses run every twenty minutes, you can extend the timetable yourself: after eight oh five comes eight twenty-five. And once you are on the bus, the journey time is added to the departure, not to when you arrived at the stop.
Your Turn
You reach the stop at 7:28. How long until the next bus? Check: 7:45 − 7:28 = 17 min.
Watch Out
Add the journey to the DEPARTURE time, not to your arrival at the stop. 7:45 + 28 min = 8:13.
Explanation
A train timetable lists stops across and trains down. The time between two stops is the difference of the two entries on that train's row: Central eight twelve to Strathfield eight twenty-four is twelve minutes, and Central to Penrith is fifty-eight. Adding the legs gives the same fifty-eight, and if the two methods disagree you misread a cell. If you must be somewhere by nine and the train arrives at nine ten, it is the wrong train by ten minutes; look for an earlier row.
Your Turn
Parramatta 8:38 to Penrith 9:10 — how long? Check: 22 min to 9:00, 10 more = 32 min.
Watch Out
Subtract times across a row, not down a column. Down a column is a different train.
Explanation
Which film can you see from start to finish between a drop-off and a pick-up? Two checks, and both must pass: it starts after the drop-off, and it ends before the pick-up. Dropped at twelve and collected at two thirty, Lost Map is the only one: Robot Kids starts in time but runs five minutes past the pick-up, and Deep Blue ends in time but had already started. Then the small questions: the wait before it starts, twenty minutes, and the spare time after, another twenty.
Your Turn
Dropped off at 12:45, picked up at 2:40. Which film fits? Check: Robot Kids (1:00 to 2:35). Lost Map started at 12:20; Star Trail ends at 4:05.
Watch Out
A film that ends five minutes after the pick-up does NOT fit. "Nearly" is not the question.
Explanation
Every timetable question is find the right cell, then hop. The wait is the next departure minus your arrival. The arrival is the departure plus the journey. Home by four thirty with a twenty-minute walk: Star Trail ends at four oh five, the walk gets you home at four twenty-five, five minutes to spare. A train that arrives at nine ten when you needed nine is ten minutes late. Quiz and exercises now.
Your Turn
You must be home by 4:30 pm and the walk from the cinema takes 20 min. Star Trail ends at 4:05. How many minutes to spare? Check: 4:05 + 20 = 4:25; 5 min.
Watch Out
Read which time the question wants: the wait, the arrival, or the spare time. They are three different subtractions.
📌 Key Points — this lesson in a nutshell
- Read a timetable along its row (one film, one bus) and down its column (one stop, every bus).
- How long to wait = the next departure after you arrive, minus your arrival time.
- A film "fits" between drop-off and pick-up only if it starts after the drop-off and ends before the pick-up. Two checks.
- Durations from a timetable are hops through the landmarks, as always: 12:20 to 2:10 is 1 h 50 min.
