Duration across Midnight and across Days

Lesson Guide
Explanation
A duration is the distance between two times, and the safe way to measure it is to hop through landmarks, exactly as bridging did for subtraction. From three forty to five ten: twenty minutes reach four o'clock, an hour reaches five, ten more minutes reach five ten. One hour thirty. Subtracting the times like ordinary numbers gives one point seven, which is nonsense, because an hour has sixty minutes, not a hundred. Hop, then add the hops.
Your Turn
From 8:15 am to 11:45 am — how many minutes? Check: 45 min to 9:00, 2 h to 11:00, 45 min → 3 h 30 min = 210 minutes.
Watch Out
Never subtract clock times as decimals. 5:10 − 3:40 is not 1.70. Hop.
Explanation
When the interval crosses midnight, midnight is simply the biggest landmark. From nine fifty at night to six thirty in the morning: two hours ten minutes reach midnight, then six hours thirty from midnight, eight hours forty altogether. Eleven forty at night to two forty-five in the morning: twenty minutes to midnight, then two hours forty-five, three hours five. Stop at twelve, write down what you have, carry on.
Your Turn
From 11:40 pm to 2:45 am — how long? Check: 20 min + 2 h 45 min = 3 h 5 min.
Watch Out
Do not let the hour go backwards. From 11:40 pm to 2:45 am is 3 hours, not "11 to 2 is 9".
Explanation
The twenty-four-hour clock counts straight through the day, from zero-zero-zero-zero at midnight to twenty-three fifty-nine. To turn a pm time into it, add twelve to the hour; to turn it back, take twelve off. Eighteen fifty plus a quarter of an hour: ten minutes reach nineteen hundred, five more reach nineteen oh five, which is five past seven in the evening. Durations are easier in twenty-four-hour time because nothing restarts at twelve — but the minutes still roll over at sixty, so eighteen fifty plus fifteen is nineteen oh five, never eighteen sixty-five.
Your Turn
A film starts at 1915 and ends at 2105. How long is it? Check: 45 min + 1 h 5 min = 1 h 50 min.
Watch Out
Minutes go to 59 then the hour ticks. 1850 + 15 min = 1905. There is no such time as 1865.
Explanation
A journey longer than a day is handled in whole days first. Fifty hours is two days and two hours: take off twenty-four for each day and keep what is left. Whole days move the day name and leave the clock alone; then the extra hours move the clock and perhaps the day once more. Leave Saturday at twenty-two hundred and travel thirty hours: one day later is Sunday twenty-two hundred, six hours more is Monday oh four hundred. A twenty-hour flight from Friday thirteen hundred: eleven hours reach Saturday midnight, nine more reach Saturday oh nine hundred. Say the day at every step.
Your Turn
A 20-hour flight leaves Friday at 1300. When does it land? Check: Saturday 0900.
Watch Out
Track the day name. A 20-hour flight leaving Friday lands on Saturday, and "0900" without the day is half an answer.
Explanation
When the finish is known and the start is wanted, hop backwards. A movie ends at four fifteen after running one hour fifty: fifteen minutes back reaches four, an hour back reaches three, and the remaining thirty-five minutes reach two twenty-five. When the duration comes in pieces — a forty-minute route, a fifteen-minute break, a twenty-five-minute route — add them first, eighty minutes, then hop back once. Check by running forwards from the start. Quiz and exercises now.
Your Turn
A bus reaches the depot at 6:05 pm after a 40-min route, a 15-min break and a 25-min route. When did the first route begin? Check: 80 min before 6:05 → 4:45 pm.
Watch Out
Add all the parts of the duration before going back. Hopping back 40, then 15, then 25 works too, but forgetting one part is the usual slip.
📌 Key Points — this lesson in a nutshell
  • Find a duration by hopping through landmarks: to the next hour, then whole hours, then the last minutes.
  • Crossing midnight: hop to 12:00, then carry on from 12:00. 9:50 pm to 6:30 am is 2 h 10 min + 6 h 30 min.
  • 24-hour time removes am/pm: 1850 + 15 min = 1905 = 7:05 pm. Add 12 to a pm hour to convert.
  • Whole days: 50 hours is 2 days and 2 hours. Count the days, then the hours left over.
Step 1: Introduction
Step 1 of 5
From 3:40 to 5:10 1212345678910113:40→1212345678910115:10 3:40+ 20 min4:00+ 1 h5:00+ 10 min5:10 20 min + 1 h + 10 min = 1 h 30 min. Hop to the next round hour, then in whole hours, then the last few minutes. Add the hops. Subtracting 3:40 from 5:10 as if they were ordinary numbers gives 1.70 — sixty minutes in an hour, not a hundred.
From 9:50 pm to 6:30 am 1212345678910119:50 pm→1212345678910116:30 am 9:50 pm+ 2 h 10midnight+ 6 h 306:30 am 2 h 10 min + 6 h 30 min = 8 h 40 min. 11:40 pm to 2:45 am: 20 min to midnight, then 2 h 45 min → 3 h 5 min. Midnight is just another landmark. Hop to it, note the time so far, carry on from 12:00.
1850 plus a quarter of an hour 1850+ 10 min1900+ 5 min1905 1905 is 7:05 pm — take 12 off a 24-hour hour of 13 or more. The 24-hour clock counts straight through: 0000 is midnight, 1200 is midday, 2359 is one minute to midnight. pm → 24-hour: add 12 to the hour. 7:05 pm = 1905. 24-hour → pm: take 12 off. 2105 = 9:05 pm. A film from 1915 to 2105: 45 min to 2000, then 1 h 5 min → 1 h 50 min. 0745 to 1215: 4 h 30 min. Durations are easier in 24-hour time because there is no am/pm to keep track of and no restart at 12. Still hop: the minutes still roll over at 60. 1850 + 15 is 1905, not 1865.
A journey of 50 hours 50 h− 2426 h− 242 h 50 hours = 2 days and 2 hours Take off 24 for each whole day. What is left is the extra hours. Leave Saturday 2200, travel 30 hours: 30 = 1 day + 6 h. One day later is Sunday 2200; 6 h more is Monday 0400. A 20-hour flight from Friday 1300: 11 h reach midnight (Saturday 0000), 9 h more reach Saturday 0900. Whole days move the day name and leave the clock alone. Then the extra hours move the clock — and maybe the day once more. Say the day at every step. "Friday 1300 … Saturday 0000 … Saturday 0900."
A movie ends at 4:15 pm after running 1 h 50 min. When did it start? 4:15 pm− 15 min4:00− 1 h3:00− 35 min2:25 pm Hop backwards: 15 min to 4:00, 1 h to 3:00, and the remaining 35 min to 2:25 pm. 1 h 50 min is 15 + 60 + 35. Split the duration at the landmarks the same way as going forwards. A bus reaches the depot at 6:05 pm after a 40-min route, a 15-min break and a 25-min route: 80 min back → 4:45 pm. Add up all the pieces of the duration first (40 + 15 + 25 = 80), then hop back once. Check forwards: 2:25 + 1 h 50 = 4:15 ✓. Quiz and exercises now.
