Mental Strategies with Large Numbers

Lesson Guide
Explanation
When one of the numbers is nearly round, treat it as round and fix it afterwards. Three thousand nine hundred and ninety-eight is two short of four thousand, and four thousand plus two thousand seven hundred and forty-five is easy: six thousand seven hundred and forty-five. But you added two too many, so take two off: six thousand seven hundred and forty-three. Subtraction works the same way in reverse. Eight thousand two hundred and fifty minus one thousand nine hundred and ninety-five: take away two thousand to get six thousand two hundred and fifty, and because you took away five too many, give five back: six thousand two hundred and fifty-five.
Your Turn
Work out 5 997 + 3 480 by compensating. Check: 6 000 + 3 480 = 9 480, then − 3 = 9 477.
Watch Out
The fix goes the OPPOSITE way to the change. Round up when adding → subtract the extra. Round up when subtracting → add the extra back.
Explanation
When neither number is near anything round, split them both into their place-value parts and add the parts. Four thousand three hundred and fifty-six plus two thousand eight hundred and thirty: the thousands make six thousand, the hundreds make eleven hundred, the tens make eighty, the ones make six. Then add those from the biggest down, saying the running total: six thousand, seven thousand one hundred, seven thousand one hundred and eighty, seven thousand one hundred and eighty-six. Eleven hundred being more than a thousand is not a problem — it simply carries into the thousands when you recombine.
Your Turn
Add 3 270 + 5 480 by partitioning. Check: 8 000 + 600 + 150 = 8 750.
Watch Out
Keep the parts in their columns. The 300 in 4 356 is three hundred, not 3 — students who split into digits instead of values get nonsense.
Explanation
A subtraction is the distance between two numbers, and you can measure that distance by counting up from the smaller one through round landmarks. Five thousand minus three thousand seven hundred and eighty: from three thousand seven hundred and eighty up to four thousand is two hundred and twenty, and from four thousand up to five thousand is another thousand, so the distance is one thousand two hundred and twenty. Giving change is the same move: from thirty-seven dollars forty-five, five cents reaches thirty-seven fifty, fifty cents reaches thirty-eight, twelve dollars reaches fifty. No borrowing, no crossing out.
Your Turn
Work out 8 000 − 6 540 by bridging. Check: 460 to 7 000, then 1 000 → 1 460.
Watch Out
Add up the jumps at the end — students find each jump correctly and then forget one of them. Write the jumps down if there are more than two.
Explanation
None of these strategies is best; each fits certain numbers. Look before you start. If one number is within a few of a round number, compensate. If you are subtracting from a round number, bridge up. If neither is true, partition. And if the numbers are genuinely awkward — six digits, lots of carrying — the written column method from the next lesson is the right tool, and there is no prize for doing it in your head. On a test, choosing well is what buys you the time for the hard questions.
Your Turn
Name the strategy, then solve: 7 003 − 2 996. Check: both are near round numbers — 7 000 − 3 000 = 4 000, adjust +3 and +4 → 4 007. Or bridge: 4 to 3 000, 4 000 more, 3 more → 4 007.
Watch Out
Do not force a strategy onto numbers it does not fit. Compensating 4 356 + 2 830 saves nothing, because neither is near a round number.
Explanation
Test questions chain two or three of these together. A shop starts with twelve thousand tickets and sells three thousand nine hundred and ninety-five on Friday and four thousand two hundred and sixty on Saturday. Take the first sale off by compensating: twelve thousand minus four thousand, plus five, is eight thousand and five. Take the second off by partitioning: eight thousand and five minus four thousand is four thousand and five, minus two hundred and sixty is three thousand seven hundred and forty-five. Write each result down as you go; the numbers that get swapped are the ones you tried to hold in your head. And estimate: twelve thousand minus about eight thousand is about four thousand, so three thousand seven hundred and forty-five is believable. Quiz and exercises now.
Your Turn
A tank holds 9 000 L. 2 998 L is used on Monday and 1 750 L on Tuesday. How much is left? Check: 9 000 − 2 998 = 6 002; 6 002 − 1 750 = 4 252.
Watch Out
Read the question to the end before starting. "How many more were sold on Saturday than Friday" is a different question from "how many are left".
📌 Key Points — this lesson in a nutshell
  • Compensate: round one number to something friendly, calculate, then put back what you changed. 3 998 + 2 745 = 4 000 + 2 745 − 2.
  • Partition: split both numbers into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones, add the parts, recombine.
  • Bridge: for subtraction, count up from the smaller number through friendly landmarks. 5 000 − 3 780 is 220 to 4 000, then 1 000 more.
  • Pick the strategy that fits the numbers. Near a round number → compensate. Nothing special → partition.
Step 1: Introduction
Step 1 of 5
3 998 + 2 745 3 998+ 24 000+ 2 7456 745− 26 743 3 998 is 2 short of 4 000. Use 4 000 instead — it is easy — then take the 2 back off. 4 000 + 2 745 = 6 745. 6 745 − 2 = 6 743. Subtraction too: 8 250 − 1 995 → take away 2 000 (6 250), then give back 5 → 6 255. Adding too much? Take the extra off. Subtracting too much? Give the extra back. Look for a number that is within a few of a round number. That is the one to change.
4 356 + 2 830 thousandshundredstensones 4 000300506 2 000800300 6 0001 100806 6 000 + 1 100 + 80 + 6 = 7 186 The hundreds made 1 100 — more than a thousand. That is fine: it just joins the thousands at the end. Start from the biggest parts, so the running total stays close to the answer. Say it: "six thousand, seven thousand one hundred, seven thousand one hundred and eighty, …"
5 000 − 3 780: how far from 3 780 up to 5 000? 3 5004 0004 5005 0003 7804 0005 000 + 220 + 1 000 Subtraction is a distance. Count up from the smaller number to the larger. 3 780 → 4 000 is 220. 4 000 → 5 000 is 1 000. Together: 1 220. Choose landmarks that are round: the next hundred, the next thousand. Change from $50 for a $37.45 item is the same idea: 5c to 37.50, 50c to 38, $12 to 50 → $12.55. Bridging never needs borrowing, which is why it beats the column method in your head.
The numbers tell you which tool to pick One number near a round number?→ compensate. 6 995 + 2 340; 9 000 − 2 998 Taking away from a round number?→ bridge up. 5 000 − 3 780; 10 000 − 4 215 Nothing special about either?→ partition. 4 356 + 2 830; 7 462 − 3 251 Ten seconds looking at the numbers saves a minute of working. If none of them fits, the written column method is always there. Mental is a choice, not a rule.
A shop had 12 000 tickets. It sold 3 995 on Friday and 4 260 on Saturday. How many are left? 12 000− 3 9958 005− 4 2603 745 Step 1: 12 000 − 3 995 — compensate: 12 000 − 4 000 + 5 = 8 005. Step 2: 8 005 − 4 260 — partition: 8 005 − 4 000 − 260 = 3 745. Or add the two sales first: 3 995 + 4 260 = 8 255, then 12 000 − 8 255 = 3 745. Same answer. Write each intermediate result down. Holding two numbers in your head is where they get swapped. Estimate to check: 12 000 − 4 000 − 4 000 ≈ 4 000. ✓ Quiz and exercises now.
