Telling Time to the Minute

Lesson Guide
Explanation
A clock has two hands with two different jobs. The SHORT hand is the hour hand — it tells you which hour you're in. The LONG hand is the minute hand — it counts minutes past the hour. When the long hand points straight up at the 12, it's exactly something-o'clock: here the short hand says 3, so it's 3 o'clock.
Your Turn
On a real or toy clock, make 7 o'clock. Check: short hand at 7, long hand straight up at 12.
Watch Out
Mixing up the hands is the number one clock error. Short = hour. Long = minutes. Say it twice!
Explanation
The clock numbers do double duty. For the minute hand, each number is worth 5 minutes — your 5 times table in a circle! Long hand at the 1 means 5 past, at the 2 means 10 past, at the 6 means 30 past (half past). To read minutes: see which number the long hand points at, and multiply by 5.
Your Turn
Long hand at the 4 — how many minutes past? At the 9? Check: 20 past, and 45 past.
Watch Out
The minute hand pointing at 3 means 15 minutes, not 3 minutes! Number × 5, always.
Explanation
Between the big numbers are little marks — one per minute. To read the exact minute: skip count 5s to the last big number the long hand passed, then count the little marks past it. Long hand two marks past the 2? That's 10 + 2 = 12 minutes past. Big jumps of 5, little steps of 1.
Your Turn
The long hand is 3 marks past the 7. How many minutes? Check: 35 + 3 = 38 minutes past.
Watch Out
Count marks AFTER the big number, not before it. And remember the hour hand creeps forward too — nearly-there positions can fool you.
Explanation
Digital clocks show hour:minutes — 6:50 reads 'six fifty'. But people often say '10 to 7' instead, counting DOWN to the next hour: 60 − 50 = 10 minutes to go. Both name the same moment! Up to half past we usually say 'past'; after half past, 'to' the next hour. 6:15 is quarter past six; 6:45 is quarter to seven.
Your Turn
Say 8:40 in 'to' language, and 'twenty past three' as digital. Check: 20 to 9; and 3:20.
Watch Out
In 'to' language the HOUR jumps ahead: 6:50 is ten to SEVEN, not ten to six.
Explanation
Let's put it all together. Long hand at 6 = 30 minutes = half past. Digital 11:45 = quarter to 12. Long hand two marks past the 8 = 42 minutes past. Reading time is detective work: hour hand for the hour, minute hand in 5s and 1s, and 'past' or 'to' to say it like a human. You're ready — quiz and exercises!
Your Turn
Read the time RIGHT NOW on a clock near you. Say it three ways if you can: digital, 'past', and 'to'.
Watch Out
When the hour hand sits between two numbers, the hour is the SMALLER one — 4:42 has the hour hand nearly at 5, but the hour is still 4.
Step 1: Introduction
Step 1 of 5
Short hand = hour · Long hand = minutes 121234567891011 3 o’clock Short hand points at 3, long hand straight up at 12 → exactly 3 o'clock.
Each number = 5 minutes 121234567891011 10 minutes past 6 00510152025303540455055 Long hand at the 2 → 2 × 5 = 10 minutes past. Skip count: 5, 10!
Count 5s, then 1s 121234567891011 12 minutes past 6 Past the 2 by two little marks: 10 + 2 = 12 minutes past 6.
Two ways to say the same time 6:50 "6 fifty" 50 minutes past 6 "10 to 7" 10 minutes before 7 o'clock Past 30 minutes, we often count DOWN to the next hour: 6:50 = ten to seven (60 − 50 = 10 minutes to go).
Match the times ⏰ Long hand at 6, short hand halfway past 2 = half past 2 = 2:30 Digital shows 11:45 = quarter to 12 (15 minutes to go) Long hand 2 marks past the 8, short hand near 4 = 40 + 2 = 42 minutes past 4 = 4:42 You can now read ANY clock. Prove it in the quiz and exercises!
