Explanation
A number is EVEN when everything can be put into pairs with nobody left over. Six socks make three tidy pairs — 6 is even. Eight is even too. Think of lining up for partners: if everyone gets a partner, the number is even.
Your Turn
Grab some pencils or blocks — take 10 and pair them up. Anyone left over? Check: no — 10 is even.
Watch Out
Even is about PAIRS, not about being big or small. Tiny 2 is even; enormous 1,000,000 is even too.
Explanation
A number is ODD when pairing up always leaves exactly one left over. Five dots make two pairs… and one lonely dot. Seven makes three pairs and one left over. Every whole number is either odd or even — there's no in-between.
Your Turn
Try pairing up 9 blocks. How many pairs, and how many left over? Check: 4 pairs and 1 left over — 9 is odd.
Watch Out
The leftover is always exactly ONE. If you have two left over, they make another pair — pair everything up before you decide!
Explanation
You don't need to pair up four thousand dots to test 4736! Here's the trick: only look at the LAST digit. If it ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8, the number is even. If it ends in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9, it's odd. Why does this work? Because tens, hundreds and thousands always split into pairs perfectly — only the ones can leave a leftover.
Your Turn
Odd or even: 3218? 5555? 9070? Check: even (ends in 8), odd (ends in 5), even (ends in 0).
Watch Out
Only the LAST digit matters. 738 has odd digits in it (7 and 3), but it ends in 8 — it's even.
Explanation
Students often wonder about numbers ending in 0. They are even! Forty splits into twenty pairs with nothing left over. Skip counting by 2 starting at 0 — 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12… — lands on every even number. Starting at 1 — 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11… — lands on every odd number. The two counts never touch.
Your Turn
Skip count by 2 out loud from 90 to 100. Check: 90, 92, 94, 96, 98, 100 — all even.
Watch Out
Ending in 0 means even, always. 5550 is even, even though it's full of 5s.
Explanation
Here's something magical: you can predict whether an answer will be odd or even before adding! Even plus even is always even — pairs plus pairs stay pairs. Odd plus odd is EVEN — the two leftovers find each other and pair up! Odd plus even stays odd — one leftover stays lonely. Try it: 3 + 5 = 8. Two odds made an even, just like the rule promised.
Your Turn
Without adding, predict odd or even: 12 + 18? 25 + 25? 30 + 7? Check: even, even, odd. Now add them to confirm: 30, 50, 37.
Watch Out
Odd + odd = EVEN surprises everyone. Picture the two lonely leftovers pairing up and it makes perfect sense.
Explanation
Odd and even pop up everywhere — house numbers on opposite sides of the street, sharing between friends, teams and partners. Detectives use the rules: 'I am even, bigger than 46 and smaller than 50' — the numbers between are 47, 48, 49, and only 48 is even. Case closed! Now it's your turn in the quiz and exercises.
Your Turn
One last riddle: I'm odd, I end in 5, and I'm between 30 and 40. Who am I? Check: 35.
Watch Out
In riddles, test EVERY clue. A number that fits two clues but fails the third is not the answer.
Step 1: Introduction
Step 1 of 6
Even = everyone has a partner 6 — even ✓ 8 — even ✓ An even number of things can ALL be put in pairs. Socks, shoes, partners for a dance — nobody left over.
Odd = one left over 5 — odd 7 — odd An odd number always leaves ONE without a partner. The one left over is circled in red above.
Just look at the LAST digit EVEN endings 0 2 4 6 8 ODD endings 1 3 5 7 9 4 736 → even 2 851 → odd Why? Thousands, hundreds and tens always split into pairs perfectly — so only the ones digit can leave someone without a partner.
Is a number ending in 0 even? 4 0 ✓ 40 = 20 pairs exactly — even! 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 … all even. A number ending in 0 splits into pairs with nothing left over. Skip counting by 2 from 0 lands on every even number: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10…
What happens when we add? even + even = even 4 + 6 = 10 · pairs plus pairs stay pairs odd + odd = even 3 + 5 = 8 · the two leftovers find each other and make a pair! odd + even = odd 3 + 4 = 7 · one leftover stays lonely You can predict odd/even BEFORE working out the answer!
Detective time 🔍 Q: I am even, bigger than 46, smaller than 50. Who am I? A: 47, 48, 49 are between — only 48 is even. ✓ Q: Can 3 friends share 7 stickers as pairs each? A: 7 is odd — someone always gets the odd one out. Q: House numbers 1, 3, 5, 7 are on one side of a street. Why? A: Streets often put odd numbers on one side, even on the other! Odd and even are everywhere — now try the quiz and exercises!
