Missing Number Sentences

Lesson Guide
Explanation
The box stands for a number, and your job is to work out which one. Eight plus box equals fifteen. Draw it as a whole and two parts: fifteen is the whole, eight is one part, and the box is the other part. To find a missing part, take the part you know from the whole — fifteen take eight is seven. Then put it back in and check: eight plus seven is fifteen. It works, so seven is right.
Your Turn
Find the box: 6 + ? = 14. Check: 14 − 6 = 8, and 6 + 8 = 14.
Watch Out
The answer is not the number already in the sentence. 8 + ? = 15 does not make the box 15.
Explanation
When the box is at the front of a take-away, it is the whole, not a part. Box take seven equals twelve — so seven came out of the box and twelve was left. To get the whole back, put the seven in again: twelve plus seven is nineteen. Check: nineteen take seven is twelve. Taking away is undone by adding. And notice the answer is bigger than both numbers in the sentence, which is a useful sign you have done it the right way round.
Your Turn
Find the box: ? − 9 = 20. Check: 20 + 9 = 29, and 29 − 9 = 20.
Watch Out
Do not take away again. A box at the front of a take-away is found by ADDING.
Explanation
This is the one that catches people out. Twenty take box equals thirteen. Twenty is the whole and thirteen is what is left, so the box is the gap between them: twenty take thirteen is seven. Check by putting it back: twenty take seven is thirteen. It works. The safe habit here is always to ask what the whole is before you do anything, because the whole is the biggest number in the sentence, and everything else fits inside it.
Your Turn
Find the box: 30 − ? = 18. Check: 30 − 18 = 12, and 30 − 12 = 18.
Watch Out
Adding here gives 33, which is bigger than the whole. That is the sign you went the wrong way.
Explanation
Boxes work the same way with times and share. Six times box equals thirty: times is undone by sharing, so thirty divided by six is five. Check — six times five is thirty. Box divided by four equals three: sharing is undone by times, so three times four is twelve. Check — twelve divided by four is three. Every operation has one that undoes it. Add and take away undo each other, times and share undo each other. Use the opposite one on the box, then put your answer back in.
Your Turn
Find the box: 7 × ? = 42. Check: 42 ÷ 7 = 6, and 7 × 6 = 42.
Watch Out
Match the operation to its opposite. Sharing when you should times gives a very small answer.
Explanation
Some questions ask for the number sentence rather than the answer. Twelve pizzas with four on each tray — twelve times four is forty-eight, which is far too many trays, and twelve plus four is sixteen, which makes no sense because you cannot add pizzas to trays. Twelve divided by four is three, and three trays is right. The trick is to work out the answer in your head first, then find the sentence that gives it. That is the whole lesson: add and take away undo each other, times and share undo each other, and always check by putting your answer back. Quiz and exercises now.
Your Turn
Which sentence finds how many boxes hold 18 muffins, 6 to a box? Check: 18 ÷ 6.
Watch Out
Read the sentence, not just the numbers. All four options use the same two numbers.
📌 Key Points — this lesson in a nutshell
  • The box stands for a number. Your job is to work out which one.
  • If the box is being added, find it by taking away. If it is being taken away, find it by adding.
  • The safest method: ask "what is the whole and what is the part?"
  • Always put your answer back in and check the sentence is true.
Step 1: Introduction
Step 1 of 5
8 + ? = 15 8+=15 15 8 ? 15 is the whole. 8 is one part. The box is the other part. So take 8 from 15: the box is 7. Check: 8 + 7 = 15. ✓ The box is just a number wearing a disguise.
? − 7 = 12 −7=12 12+ 719check19 − 7 = 12 Here the box is the WHOLE, not a part. 7 was taken out of it and 12 was left. To get the whole back, put the 7 in again: 12 + 7 = 19. Check: 19 − 7 = 12. ✓ Taking away is undone by adding. That is the rule for a box at the front. The answer is BIGGER than both numbers here, which is a useful sign you did it right.
20 − ? = 13 20−=13 20 13 ? 20 is the whole and 13 is what is left, so the box is the GAP between them. 20 − 13 = 7, so the box is 7. Check: 20 − 7 = 13. ✓ This one catches people out. Ask what is the whole before you do anything.
6 × ? = 30 and ? ÷ 4 = 3 6×=30 ÷4=3 Times is undone by sharing. 30 ÷ 6 = 5 Check: 6 × 5 = 30 ✓ Sharing is undone by times. 3 × 4 = 12 Check: 12 ÷ 4 = 3 ✓ Every operation has one that undoes it. add ↔ take away  ·  times ↔ share Use the opposite one on the box, and check by putting your answer back in.
12 pizzas, 4 to a tray 12 × 4 = ?48 — far too many trays 12 + 4 = ?16 — adding pizzas to trays makes no sense 12 ÷ 4 = ?3 trays ✓ Some questions ask for the SENTENCE, not the answer. Work out the answer in your head anyway — 3 trays — then find the sentence that gives 3. Boxes: add ↔ take away, times ↔ share, and always check by putting it back. Quiz and exercises now.
