AMC Intermediate-Style Paper 1

Lesson Guide
Explanation
This paper is in the shape of the Australian Mathematics Competition, Intermediate division, for Years 9 and 10: thirty questions in seventy-five minutes. Questions one to twenty-five have five options; questions twenty-six to thirty ask for a whole number from zero to nine hundred and ninety-nine, which you type in. The questions get harder as you go, and the last ones are worth the most, so do not spend twenty minutes on question twelve. Most students do not finish; a strong score comes from getting the first twenty right and picking off a few of the hard ones.
Your Turn
Before you start, say the plan once: read twice, draw it, write each step down, never leave a blank.
Watch Out
An easy calculation does not mean an easy question. The trap is in the reading — "odd", "exactly", "at least", "each must touch".
📌 Key Points — this lesson in a nutshell
  • 30 questions, 75 minutes: 1–25 have options A–E, 26–30 are typed whole numbers 0–999.
  • The paper gets harder as it goes and the later questions are worth more — bank the early ones first.
  • No penalty for guessing on 1–25. On 26–30 a whole-number answer usually means there is a clean method.
  • No calculator. If the arithmetic gets ugly, you have missed the idea the question is built on.
