Lesson Guide
Explanation
Two figures are similar when one is an enlargement of the other. Their angles are equal, and every pair of matching sides is in the same ratio. The second triangle here has been flipped over and turned, so you cannot match sides by where they are on the page. Match the angles instead. The single arc at A matches the single arc at R, the double arc at B matches P, and the triple arc at C matches Q. So side A B goes with side R P, B C goes with P Q, and C A goes with Q R. Six over four, nine over six and twelve over eight all equal one point five, so the triangles are similar.
Your Turn
Triangles with sides 5, 7, 9 and 10, 14, 18. Are they similar? Check: 10 ÷ 5 = 14 ÷ 7 = 18 ÷ 9 = 2, so yes.
Watch Out
Do not pair sides by their position on the page. Pair them by the equal angles: the side between the single and double arcs goes with the side between the single and double arcs.
Explanation
The scale factor tells you how many times bigger the image is than the original. Divide an image length by the matching original length. Twelve divided by four is three, and nine divided by three is also three, so the scale factor is three. If you go the other way, from the big rectangle back to the small one, the scale factor is four divided by twelve, which is one third. A scale factor bigger than one makes an enlargement, and a scale factor between zero and one makes a reduction.
Your Turn
A 5 cm by 2 cm card becomes 7.5 cm by 3 cm. Find k. Check: 7.5 ÷ 5 = 1.5 and 3 ÷ 2 = 1.5, so k = 1.5.
Watch Out
Image on top, original underneath. Dividing 4 ÷ 12 for this enlargement gives \(\dfrac{1}{3}\), a scale factor that would shrink the rectangle.
Explanation
To find a missing side, first find the scale factor from a pair of sides you know completely. D E is four and its match K L is seven, so k is seven divided by four, which is one point seven five. The side x matches D F, which is six. Multiply: six times one point seven five is ten point five. You can also write it as a ratio: x over six equals seven over four. Either way, x is ten point five.
Your Turn
Sides 8 and 10 in one triangle match 6 and y in a similar triangle. Check: k = 6 ÷ 8 = 0.75, so y = 10 × 0.75 = 7.5.
Watch Out
Lengths are multiplied, not shifted. "7 is 3 more than 4, so x = 6 + 3 = 9" is the additive slip, and 9 is wrong.
Explanation
At the same moment, the sun's rays hit the ground at the same angle everywhere nearby. Each upright object and its shadow make a right-angled triangle, and those triangles have equal angles, so they are similar. The person is one point six metres tall with a two metre shadow, so height divided by shadow is zero point eight. The tree's shadow is fifteen metres, so its height is zero point eight times fifteen, which is twelve metres.
Your Turn
A 1 m stick casts a 1.5 m shadow. A wall casts a 6 m shadow. Check: height ÷ shadow = 1 ÷ 1.5, so the wall is 6 ÷ 1.5 = 4 m.
Watch Out
Use the same order for both: height ÷ shadow. Flipping one ratio gives 15 × 2 ÷ 1.6 = 18.75 m, which is wrong.
Explanation
When a line inside a triangle is parallel to one side, it cuts off a small triangle that is similar to the big one. Triangle A D E and triangle A B C share the angle at A, and because D E is parallel to B C, the angles at D and B are equal corresponding angles. The trap is the matching. A D in the small triangle matches the whole side A B in the big triangle, which is four plus six, or ten, not just the six. So k is ten divided by four, which is two point five, and B C is five times two point five, which is twelve point five. Quiz and exercises now.
Your Turn
AD = 2, DB = 3 and DE = 4, with DE ∥ BC. Find BC. Check: AB = 5, k = 5 ÷ 2 = 2.5, so BC = 10.
Watch Out
AD matches the WHOLE side AB = 10, not DB = 6. Using DB gives BC = 5 × 6 ÷ 4 = 7.5, which is wrong.
📌 Key Points — this lesson in a nutshell
- Similar figures have the same shape: equal angles, and every pair of matching sides in the same ratio.
- Match sides by the equal angles, not by where they sit on the page — the figure may be turned or flipped.
- Scale factor k = image length ÷ original length. k > 1 enlarges; k < 1 reduces.
- For a missing side, find k from one complete pair, then multiply. Never add the difference.
- Shadows cast at the same moment, and a triangle inside a triangle with a parallel side, are similar. Match the small side with the whole side of the big triangle.
