Level 1 · Warm-up

1 A netball team has won 7 games and lost 4. Write the ratio of games won to games lost.
Show worked solution
Wins first, then losses: 7 : 4.
2 A recipe uses 2 cups of oats and 5 cups of flour. Write the ratio of flour to oats.
Show worked solution
Flour is named first, so 5 : 2. Writing 2 : 5 would answer oats to flour instead.
3 Paint is mixed white : blue = 3 : 4. How many equal parts is the whole mixture divided into?
Show worked solution
3 + 4 = 7 parts altogether.

Level 2 · Core

4 A class is boys : girls = 4 : 5. What fraction of the class are boys?
Show worked solution
4 + 5 = 9 parts, and boys are 4 of them, so 4/9.
5 Write the ratio equivalent to 3 : 5 that you get by doubling both parts.
Show worked solution
3 x 2 = 6 and 5 x 2 = 10, so 6 : 10.
6 Cordial : water = 1 : 6. If you use 4 cups of cordial, how many cups of water do you need?
Show worked solution
The scale factor is 4, so water = 6 x 4 = 24 cups.

Level 3 · Challenge

7 Red : blue counters = 3 : 2. There are 18 red counters. How many blue counters are there?
Show worked solution
3 x 6 = 18, so the factor is 6, and blue = 2 x 6 = 12.
8 Write 60 cm : 2 m as a ratio of two numbers, both in centimetres. Do not simplify.
Show worked solution
2 m = 200 cm, so the ratio is 60 : 200.
9 A drink is mixed juice : water = 2 : 7. What fraction of the drink is water?
Show worked solution
2 + 7 = 9 parts and 7 of them are water, so 7/9.
