Lesson Guide
Explanation
This paper is in the shape of the ACER scholarship test that private schools use for Year 7 entry: thirty-five questions, four options each, forty minutes, no calculator. It is a different animal from the placement test. The arithmetic is deliberately easy — ACER says so in its own booklet — and what is being tested is whether you can see the structure of a problem: which of four squares to put where to make the longest perimeter, whether half the speed for twice the time is the same distance, how many odd numbers under fifty divide by three. Read each question twice, draw the situation if there is one, and do the whole paper in one sitting.
Your Turn
Before you start, say the plan once: read twice, draw it, write each step down, never leave a blank.
Watch Out
An easy calculation does not mean an easy question. The trap is in the reading — "odd", "exactly", "at least", "each must touch".
📌 Key Points — this lesson in a nutshell
  • 35 questions in 40 minutes, four options A–D — the ACER scholarship form, not the placement form.
  • No difficult calculations: if you are doing long multiplication, you have missed the shortcut the question is built on.
  • The test is in the reading: "odd", "exactly", "at least", "each must touch" decide the answer.
  • Draw the situation. Most of these are solved on the diagram, not in the arithmetic.
