Explanation
A quarter of twenty means twenty shared into four equal groups, and one of those groups: twenty divided by four, five. That is all a unit fraction of an amount is — a division by the bottom number. A fifth of forty dollars is eight dollars; a tenth of two metres is twenty centimetres, once the two metres is written as two hundred centimetres so the division comes out whole. A quarter of an hour is fifteen minutes for the same reason: sixty divided by four.
Your Turn
Find 1/3 of 18, 1/5 of 30 and 1/10 of 250. Check: 6, 6, 25.
Watch Out
1/4 of 20 is 20 ÷ 4, not 20 ÷ 1 and not 20 × 4. The bottom number is how many groups.
Explanation
For any fraction, find the unit fraction first and then multiply by the top. Three quarters of twenty: a quarter is five, so three quarters are three fives, fifteen. Two fifths of forty dollars: a fifth is eight, two fifths are sixteen. Three tenths of two metres: a tenth is twenty centimetres, three tenths are sixty. Divide by the bottom, multiply by the top, always in that order, because the division is the one that has to come out whole.
Your Turn
Find 2/5 of $40 and 3/4 of 1 hour. Check: $16; 45 minutes.
Watch Out
Bottom divides, top multiplies. Swapping them — 20 ÷ 3 × 4 — gives a fraction and the wrong answer.
Explanation
When the amount is a picture, the amount is the number of pieces in it. A wall with ten sections: two fifths of ten is four sections, a half is five, so one section is green. A strip of twelve cells, two thirds of it: a third is four cells, two thirds are eight. You can think of it as renaming — two fifths is four tenths — or as fraction-of-an-amount with the amount being ten. Both roads reach four.
Your Turn
A strip has 36 cells. How many cells is 5/6 of it? Check: a sixth is 6, five sixths are 30.
Watch Out
Count the pieces in the picture first. 2/5 of a wall with 10 sections is 4; of a wall with 15 sections it would be 6.
Explanation
The reverse question gives you the part and asks for the whole. A quarter of a number is twelve: forwards was divide by four, so backwards is multiply by four, forty-eight. When the fraction is not a unit fraction, find the unit fraction first. Three fifths of a number is twenty-four: three fifths are twenty-four, so one fifth is eight, and the whole is five eights, forty. Draw a strip with five cells, shade three, share the twenty-four between the shaded cells, and the whole strip is five times one cell. Then check forwards.
Your Turn
5/6 of a number is 60. What is the number? Check: a sixth is 12, so 72.
Watch Out
Divide by the TOP to find one part, then multiply by the BOTTOM. 24 ÷ 3 = 8, then 8 × 5 = 40 — not 24 × 5 ÷ 3 in your head where the 3 gets lost.
Explanation
In a story, the two questions are which amount the fraction is of, and whether you want the part, the rest, or the whole. Mia spends two fifths of forty dollars: she spends sixteen and has twenty-four left, which you can find either by subtracting or by taking three fifths directly. Turn it round — she spends two fifths and has twenty-four left, what did she have — and twenty-four is three fifths, so a fifth is eight and she had forty. A quarter cut off a three-metre plank leaves three quarters of three hundred centimetres, two hundred and twenty-five. Quiz and exercises now.
Your Turn
Ben reads 3/8 of a 120-page book. How many pages are left? Check: 3/8 of 120 = 45 read, 75 left (or 5/8 of 120 = 75).
Watch Out
"Has 2/5 left" and "spent 2/5" are different stories. Underline whether the fraction is the part used or the part remaining.
📌 Key Points — this lesson in a nutshell
  • A unit fraction of an amount is a division: 1/4 of 20 is 20 ÷ 4 = 5.
  • Any fraction: find the unit fraction first, then multiply. 3/4 of 20: a quarter is 5, three quarters are 15.
  • Measures and money are amounts too: 3/10 of 2 m is 3 × (200 cm ÷ 10) = 60 cm.
  • Backwards: if 1/4 of a number is 12, the number is 12 × 4 = 48. If 3/5 is 24, one fifth is 8 and the number is 40.
Step 1: Introduction
Step 1 of 5
1/4 of 20 20 shared into 4 equal groups one group is 20 ÷ 4 = 5 "1/4 of" means "divide by 4". "1/5 of" means "divide by 5". "1/10 of" means "divide by 10". 1/3 of 18 = 6. 1/5 of 30 = 6. 1/10 of 250 = 25. 1/2 of 46 = 23. 1/4 of 1 hour: 60 ÷ 4 = 15 minutes. 1/5 of $40: 40 ÷ 5 = $8. 1/10 of 2 m: 200 ÷ 10 = 20 cm. For a measure, convert to the smaller unit first so the division comes out whole: 2 m → 200 cm. The bottom of the fraction is the number of equal groups. The answer is one group.
3/4 of 20 20÷ 45× 315 One quarter of 20 is 5. Three quarters is three of those: 3 × 5 = 15. 2/5 of $40: a fifth is 8, two fifths are $16. 3/10 of 2 m: a tenth is 20 cm, three tenths are 60 cm. 3/4 of an hour: a quarter is 15 min, three quarters are 45 min. 5/6 of 72: a sixth is 12, five sixths are 60. Divide by the bottom, multiply by the top. Always in that order, so the division stays whole. 3/4 of 20 is NOT 20 ÷ 3 × 4. The bottom divides; the top multiplies.
Jack paints 2/5 of a 10-section wall yellow and half of it purple. How many sections are green? yellow 4 · purple 5 · green 1 2/5 of 10 sections: a fifth of 10 is 2, so two fifths are 4 sections. 1/2 of 10 sections: 5 sections. 10 − 4 − 5 = 1 green section. The "amount" here is 10 sections. A fraction of a picture is a fraction of the number of pieces in it. A 12-cell strip: 2/3 of it is 8 cells. A 36-cell strip: 5/6 of it is 30 cells. This is also renaming: 2/5 = 4/10. Both roads reach 4.
A quarter of a number is 12. What is the number? 12 one quarter is 12, so the whole is 4 × 12 = 48 Forwards was "÷ 4". Backwards is "× 4". 3/5 of a number is 24: three fifths are 24, so ONE fifth is 24 ÷ 3 = 8, and the whole is 5 × 8 = 40. 5/6 of a number is 60: a sixth is 60 ÷ 5 = 12; the number is 6 × 12 = 72. Draw the strip with the bottom number of cells. Shade the top number. The shaded cells share the given amount equally. Then one cell is known, and the whole strip is cells × one cell. Check forwards: 3/5 of 40 — a fifth is 8, three fifths are 24 ✓
Reading which amount, and which fraction of it Mia spends 2/5 of her $40. How much does she spend?2/5 of 40 = $16 … How much does she have left?40 − 16 = $24 Mia spends 2/5 and has $24 left. How much did she have?3/5 = 24 → $40 A 3 m plank: 1/4 is cut off. How long is the rest?3/4 of 300 = 225 cm "Left" after spending 2/5 is 3/5 of the money. Either find 2/5 and subtract, or find 3/5 directly. Read which amount the fraction is OF, and whether you want the part, the rest, or the whole. Quiz and exercises now.
