Dividing by a 2-Digit Number

Maths · Stage 3
Year 5
Lesson Guide
Explanation
Dividing by a two-digit number is easy once you can see the multiples of it, so start by writing a short table: twelve times one, two, five, ten, twenty, fifty. You need no new facts — five is half of ten, twenty is double ten, fifty is half of a hundred. Then chunk. Nine hundred and thirty-six: take away six hundred, which is twelve fifties, leaving three hundred and thirty-six. Take away two hundred and forty, twelve twenties, leaving ninety-six. That is twelve eights exactly. Add the chunks: fifty plus twenty plus eight is seventy-eight. Check by multiplying: twelve times seventy-eight is nine hundred and thirty-six.
Your Turn
Divide 897 by 23 by chunking. Check: 23 × 30 = 690 leaves 207; 23 × 9 = 207. So 39.
Watch Out
Add up the multipliers (50 + 20 + 8), not the chunks you subtracted (600 + 240 + 96). The chunks add back to 936; the multipliers are the answer.
Explanation
Some divisors are friendly because you already know their multiples. Twenty-five: four of them make a hundred, so twelve hundred holds four times twelve, forty-eight. Fifteen: two hundred and twenty-five is a hundred and fifty plus seventy-five, ten fifteens plus five fifteens, so fifteen. Twelve: eighty-four is seven twelves from the tables. Money shared by eighteen: eighteen fifties are nine hundred, leaving four hundred and fifty, which is eighteen twenty-fives, so seventy-five. When the divisor is friendly, use what you know; when it is not, write the table and chunk.
Your Turn
Work out 1 000 ÷ 25 and 300 ÷ 12. Check: 40 (ten hundreds, times 4); 25 (12 × 25 = 300).
Watch Out
Dividing by 25 is NOT dividing by 20 and adjusting a bit. Four 25s in every 100 — count the hundreds and multiply by 4.
Explanation
Before dividing, estimate the size of the answer. Eight thousand six hundred and seventy-five divided by twenty-five: round to eight thousand, and eight thousand divided by twenty-five is three hundred and twenty. So the answer has three digits and sits somewhere around three hundred to four hundred. Now chunk: three hundred twenty-fives are seven thousand five hundred, leaving one thousand one hundred and seventy-five; forty more are a thousand, leaving one hundred and seventy-five; seven more, exactly. Three hundred and forty-seven — three digits, near the estimate. An answer of thirty-four or three thousand four hundred would be the wrong size, and the estimate would say so.
Your Turn
Estimate 6 072 ÷ 24, then find it exactly. Check: 6 000 ÷ 24 = 250, so about 250; exactly 253.
Watch Out
Round the NUMBER to a multiple of the divisor, not to the nearest thousand blindly. 8 675 ÷ 25 rounds nicely to 8 000 ÷ 25 or 9 000 ÷ 25 because 25 goes into both.
Explanation
With a remainder, the check matters even more. One thousand divided by thirty-two: thirty thirty-twos are nine hundred and sixty, leaving forty; one more thirty-two leaves eight; eight is less than thirty-two, so stop. Thirty-one remainder eight. Now check: thirty-two times thirty-one is nine hundred and ninety-two, plus eight is one thousand. If the check fails, a chunk was wrong. If the remainder is thirty-two or more, you stopped too early. Two thousand divided by forty-five works the same: forty-four remainder twenty, and forty-five times forty-four plus twenty is two thousand.
Your Turn
Work out 500 ÷ 18 with a remainder and check it. Check: 18 × 27 = 486, remainder 14; 486 + 14 = 500 ✓.
Watch Out
The check is divisor × quotient + remainder. Students who check with divisor × quotient alone will accept a wrong remainder.
Explanation
Division hides in stories as sharing, as rate, and as a missing factor. A seven hundred and twenty-eight page book read at twenty-six pages a day takes seven hundred and twenty-eight divided by twenty-six, twenty-eight days. One thousand three hundred and fifty dollars shared among eighteen is seventy-five each. A number times thirty-six is two thousand seven hundred and seventy-two: the number is two thousand seven hundred and seventy-two divided by thirty-six, seventy-seven. But a question like how many pages are left after twenty days is not a division at all — twenty days of twenty-six pages is five hundred and twenty, and seven hundred and twenty-eight minus that is two hundred and eight. Quiz and exercises now.
Your Turn
A machine fills 24 bottles a minute. How long to fill 1 440 bottles? Check: 1 440 ÷ 24 = 60 minutes.
Watch Out
Divide the big number by the small one. 26 ÷ 728 is not the question, however the sentence is arranged.
📌 Key Points — this lesson in a nutshell
  • Write a short multiples table for the divisor first: × 1, × 2, × 5, × 10, × 20, × 50. Everything else is built from those.
  • Chunk: take away big multiples until what is left is smaller than the divisor. Add up the chunks.
  • Estimate the size: 8 675 ÷ 25 is about 8 000 ÷ 25 = 320. A three-digit answer is right; 32 or 3 200 is a slipped column.
  • Check by multiplying back: divisor × answer + remainder must equal the number you started with.

936 ÷ 12 12 × 11212 × 22412 × 56012 × 1012012 × 2024012 × 50600 936− 600 (× 50)336− 240 (× 20)96− 96 (× 8)0 chunks: 50 + 20 + 8 = 78 936 ÷ 12 = 78, nothing left over The table takes twenty seconds and turns a hard division into subtractions you can see. × 5 is half of × 10. × 20 is double × 10. × 50 is half of × 100. No new facts needed. Take the biggest chunk that fits, every time. Fewer steps, fewer slips. Check: 12 × 78 = 936 ✓
1 200 ÷ 25, and 225 ÷ 15 ÷ 25: four 25s make 100, so 1 200 has 4 × 12 = 48 of them. ÷ 15: 225 = 150 + 75 = 15 × 10 + 15 × 5, so 15. ÷ 12: 84 = 12 × 7, straight from the tables. 25, 50, 12, 15, 20 — these divisors have facts you already own. Use them. ÷ 25: how many hundreds, times 4. ÷ 50: how many hundreds, times 2. ÷ 20: halve, then ÷ 10. $1 350 shared by 18: 18 × 50 = 900 leaves 450; 18 × 25 = 450. So $75. If the divisor is unfriendly (23, 37), go back to the table and chunk.
8 675 ÷ 25 estimate: 8 000 ÷ 25 = 320 (or 9 000 ÷ 25 = 360) — a three-digit answer around 300 to 400 34.7 two digits — a column short ✗ 347 three digits, near 350 ✓ 3 470 four digits — a column over ✗ Round the number to something the divisor goes into nicely, then divide. The estimate tells you how many DIGITS the answer has. That catches the mistakes that matter. Exact: 25 × 300 = 7 500 leaves 1 175; 25 × 40 = 1 000 leaves 175; 25 × 7 = 175. So 347. ✓ Check: 25 × 347 = 8 675 ✓
1 000 ÷ 32 32 × 13232 × 26432 × 516032 × 1032032 × 2064032 × 30960 1 000− 960 (× 30)40− 32 (× 1)8 30 + 1 = 31, remainder 8 8 is less than 32, so we stop. Check: 32 × 31 = 992, and 992 + 8 = 1 000. ✓ Multiply the divisor by your answer, add the remainder, and you must get the starting number. A remainder of 32 or more means another chunk was possible. A remainder that makes the check fail means a chunk was wrong. 2 000 ÷ 45: 45 × 40 = 1 800 leaves 200; 45 × 4 = 180 leaves 20. So 44 r 20. Check: 45 × 44 + 20 = 2 000 ✓
Which question is a division? A 728-page book, 26 pages a day. How many days?728 ÷ 26 = 28 $1 350 shared equally among 18 people.1 350 ÷ 18 = 75 A number × 36 = 2 772. What is the number?2 772 ÷ 36 = 77 After 20 days, how many pages are left?728 − 20 × 26 = 208 "How many each", "how many days", "how many groups", "what number times" — divide. "How many left after some days" — multiply the days, then subtract. Quiz and exercises now.
