Level 1 · Warm-up

1 A table shows 12 boys and 14 girls in a class. How many students altogether?
Show worked solution
12 + 14 = 26 students.
2 Of 30 students, 18 walk to school. How many do NOT walk?
Show worked solution
30 − 18 = 12 students.
3 A table row reads: dogs 9, cats 7, birds 4. What is the row total?
Show worked solution
9 + 7 + 4 = 20.

Level 2 · Core

4 In a class of 28, there are 15 girls. Of the girls, 9 play sport. How many girls do NOT play sport?
Show worked solution
15 − 9 = 6 girls.
5 A two-way table has a row total of 24 and one cell showing 11. What is the other cell in that row?
Show worked solution
24 − 11 = 13.
6 Of 40 students, 22 like maths and 25 like sport. Every student likes at least one. How many like BOTH?
Show worked solution
22 + 25 = 47, which is 7 more than 40, so 7 students were counted twice and like both.

Level 3 · Challenge

7 A table shows 30 students: 16 boys, and 18 students who walk to school. Of the boys, 9 walk. How many girls do NOT walk?
Show worked solution
Girls: 30 − 16 = 14. Walkers who are girls: 18 − 9 = 9. Girls who do not walk: 14 − 9 = 5.
8 A two-way table has row totals 18 and 22, and one column total of 25. What is the other column total?
Show worked solution
Grand total: 18 + 22 = 40. Other column: 40 − 25 = 15.
9 Of 50 people, 30 have a dog and 20 have a cat, and 8 have both. How many have NEITHER?
Show worked solution
With at least one: 30 + 20 − 8 = 42. Neither: 50 − 42 = 8.
