Level 1 · Warm-up

1 In a tally, one "gate" (four lines with one across) stands for how many?
Show worked solution
A gate is 5.
2 A tally shows 2 gates and 3 single lines. What is the count?
Show worked solution
2 × 5 + 3 = 13.
3 Soccer 12, netball 9, tennis 6. How many people were surveyed altogether?
Show worked solution
12 + 9 + 6 = 27 people.

Level 2 · Core

4 You asked 25 people and recorded counts of 10, 8 and 6. How many answers are missing?
Show worked solution
10 + 8 + 6 = 24, and 25 − 24 = 1 answer missing.
5 Dogs got 3 gates and 2 lines; cats got 2 gates and 4 lines. How many MORE votes did dogs get?
Show worked solution
Dogs: 17. Cats: 14. Dogs got 17 − 14 = 3 more.
6 A survey of 30 students found 18 like maths. How many do NOT?
Show worked solution
30 − 18 = 12 students.

Level 3 · Challenge

7 Three flavours were voted on by 40 students. Chocolate got 18 and vanilla got 13. How many voted strawberry?
Show worked solution
18 + 13 = 31, so strawberry got 40 − 31 = 9 votes.
8 In a survey, twice as many students chose blue as chose red. Altogether 21 chose one of those two. How many chose blue?
Show worked solution
Three shares make 21, so one share is 7. Blue is two shares: 14. (Red 7 + blue 14 = 21.)
9 A tally was recorded as 4 gates and 6 single lines. Explain the mistake by writing what the count should have been recorded as instead.
Show worked solution
4 gates and 6 lines is 26, but 6 singles should have become another gate: 5 gates and 1 line.

⭐ Bonus Challenge · only if the rest felt easy

10 In this tally one gate means 5. Dogs got 3 gates and 2 sticks. Cats got 2 gates and 4 sticks. How many more votes did dogs get?
Show worked solution
Dogs: 3 × 5 + 2 = 17. Cats: 2 × 5 + 4 = 14. Dogs got 17 − 14 = 3 more votes.
